I am a behavioral neuroscientist (Ph.D.). I've been pushing for the usage of the expression "confabulate" since LLMs like ChatGPT turned well known in 2022. Confabulate might not be the perfect term, but it really's significantly better than hallucinate because hallucinate is more about perception and confabulate is more details on production.And,
